The First Pebble
Didn’t make the cut
But tried my best.
I felt my heart beat, beating in my chest.
I saw the blue skies
Turn to gray
Heard the music deep inside fade away.
And then I watched that first pebble fall.
Not til my world came crashing down
Could I see it was a wall.
My poor body
Was skin and bones
My poor feet bleeding there upon the stones.
But oh my soul, what did I see?
There was nothing but the open road and me.
I took the first step
A garden grew.
With the second step I’d forgotten you.
Something sparkled
Just beyond my fears.
I was running now, smiling through my tears.
Yes, I watched that first pebble fall
And I knew right then and there
That the things that hurt the most
Were the things that made me strong enough to leave you after all.
My poor body
Just skin and bones.
My poor feet bleeding there upon the stones.
But oh my soul, what did I see?
There was nothing but the open road and me.
There was nothing but the open road and me.
