I fell in love with this song at first hearing Paul Jefferson perform it in a song circle at a South Eastern Folk Alliance gathering years ago. It speaks so powerfully to the pitfalls I’ve watched friends and loved ones succumb to over the years, and the courage it takes to resist them. The final verse, which I added, addresses one more of these traps, which I felt compelled to include.
