For DC area songwriter and singer Steven Gellman, the making of All You Need, his 10th album, has been nothing short of spectacular - from working with his dream producer, Jim Robeson, to collaborating with a stellar cadre of musicians including the Seldom Scene (Fred Travers, Ronnie Simpkins, Ron Stewart), Nina Gerber (guitarist to the late Kate Wolf), Bonnie Rideout, and Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, among others.
His last release, Cold Harbor, was a dark, but necessary, album to make in order to get to All You Need. Where Cold Harbor plunges into the impacts of mental illness, All You Need emerges on the other side with hope, levity, and, of course, acceptance.
It's not a coincidence the album begins with the track “Wintering” - a song about transition and emerging in a better place - propelled by Chinese dulcimer expertly executed by Chao Tian. The album closer, the titular “All You Need,” is intentionally positioned to leave the listener with strength and positivity.
“Some days will be easy, some days will be hard. You just need to keep going and keep pushing yourself on. What is success? I say, It’s not giving up! Believe in yourself and keep making that good art!”
Steven Gellman is a quintessential folk singer-songwriter with "insightful original songs and homespun stories [that] provide a soul-warming folk rock respite in a busy, chilly world." (Donn B. Murphy, The National Theater) His songs tell stories of everyday life wrapped in notes that will have you humming along in a style that Billboard Magazine has described as "intensely sensitive and impressively intelligent at the same time.” Gellman has performed at acclaimed venues such as the Birchmere and Club Passim and has opened for the likes of Al Stewart, Richie Havens, Dar Williams, and Cheryl Wheeler among others.
