Ari Eisinger is a literalist, one who writes out the tunes he plays and teaches. That way he gets every note. This song and the one following were part of the 1935 recording deal. Davis had just been ordained and was serious about it. The record company, ARC, would let him record a dozen Gospel songs if he would do one 78 that was just Blues. He complied, but grudgingly. In the meantime, Blind Boy Fuller, his student, used what Davis had taught him to become the dominant Blues guitarist of the 30s out of that same session. The newly minted Rev. Davis did second his mentee on a couple of numbers though - as long as he didn’t sing the words, the music itself wasn’t a sin.
