Rick Ruskin - vocals and acoustic guitar
Rick Ruskin will be known to many of you as a columnist for Fingerstyle Guitar, and a teacher at Port Townsend Blues Week. In his teenage years, when things were hopping in the Detroit Folk Scene, he spent a Summer studying with Rev. Davis, and then went home to do backup work with a local singer songwriter named Joni Mitchell. A little later he would become the guitarist in Olivia Newton-John’s back-up ensemble. Now he writes, teaches and records out of his home in Seattle, Washington. To me, this is Rev. Davis’s most beautiful song. He was rather along in years, and thinking about his own demise when he composed it. Though slowed by the effects of age, he kept working until he had a heart attack on the way to a gig. His driver immediately took him to a hospital, but he died a few days later.
