Grandpa never had a lot to say
But he was proud to tell me he was a marine
He’d say his daddy fought in world war 1
Defending you and me
That his brother died in World War II
On the beaches of Normandy
The he’d look and smile with tears in his eyes
He’d say son I hope you see
What this country means to me

Stand up a straight and cross your heart
For the men and women that did their part
To keep this country free
All gave some and some gave all
On foreign land and here at home
So remember when old glory you see
The blood was shed and life as given for us to be free

Grandpas race on earth now it’s run
He’s home with Norma Jean and Jesus Christ above
He left a box of medals a folded flag and his bible from the war
They were cedar to him that was plain to see
He kept them by his door
And on Memorial Day each year he’d put me on his lap
Place the flag in my hand his tears helped me understand

Stand up a straight and cross your heart
For the men and women that did their part
To keep this country free
All gave some and some gave all
On foreign lan and here at home
So remember when old glory you see
The blood was shed and life as given for us to be free
