My drummer Brendan Mullen (RIP) was obsessed with George Clinton. We used to play Parliament/Funkadelic records after hours at his legendary punk club, the Masque, where we both lived. “Slept on the floor” probably describes it better, the place was a beer-soaked catacomb of tunnels and hallways. One day, as I was writing the YOU GODDAM KIDS album, I asked myself the crazy question of what it would sound like to do a mashup of Clinton-style funk, combined with my atonal, off-kilter circus sound called “X-Music”. FUNKY MONSTERS was the result. The song was extraordinarily difficult to create on 8-track tape. We didn’t have computers in those days. I had to edit the tape, record stuff at different speeds, and use a number of “Musique Concréte” tape manipulation methods, as well as record the instruments section by section due to the variety of sound effects needed. It was a labor of love, obviously NOT funky as we white boys tried to throw down such a weird mix of styles. As with many of my other songs, it belongs in a cartoon.
