COME ON HOME 611
I was blessed to be in Roanoke, Va. when the last 'J' class Steam Engine was returning from being re-built in Spencer, NC. It was a exciting day, folks along the railroad tracks, tri-pods, cameras & tons of cars parked along the roadside. They didn't make many 'J' Class Steam Engines - designed to pull up to 100 cars with a whistle that screamed! All steam engiine whistles have a 'old movie' sound to them, unlike the newer diesel (plastic sounding) whistles. That in itself was exciting! Then when she rolled into Roanoke, Va. (to remain at the Transportation Museum) it was quite the homecomming! I did a bit of research and wrote this tribute to Old 611. This up-beat tune is our Bluegrass contribution, complete with fiddles, dobros & banjos. For a bit of history, memories & reflections on yester-year, Come On Home 611 is a must download for the story, the sound, and the History.
