10 Lord Levett
I wrote the melody to this song over a year ago and found these words later, which seemed to fit perfectly. Originally I discovered the lyrics in a book called The Mount Callan Garland, featuring songs from the repertoire of the wonderful Clare singer, Tom Lenihan. This love song has the familiar coda of the “Snaidhm Ghrá” (Lovers Knot) which refers to the trees that grow from the graves of a pair of unhappy lovers. The same “lovers knot” also appears in songs such as Barbara Allen and Una Bhán among others. Versions of this song occur in the ballad collection compiled by Francis Child. Though the collection was published in the late 19th century a number of the songs date back to medieval
times. The surname of the Lord varies from version to version – Lovel, Revel, Travell etc
