David Honeyboy Edwards - vocal and guitar

Recorded at a Rosenwald School on the outskirts of Clarksdale, MS July 20 and July 22, 1942 by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress Archive of Folk Songs

Lomax was a folk song collector, so he pressed Honeyboy for old songs. Honeyboy was not playing this song but knew about it enough to satisfy Lomax's agenda. Honeyboy also recorded snippets of other music he heard as a boy, including the levee camp song You Got to Roll and Just a Spoonful.

"Stagger Lee", also known as "Stagolee" and other variants, is a popular American folk song about the murder of Billy Lyons by "Stag" Lee Shelton, in St. Louis, Missouri at Christmas, 1895. The song was first published in 1911 and first recorded in 1923, by Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. (Wikipedia)
