Lyrics:
Isaac Woodard a decorated veteran
On his way home from the war
Stood proud for what he done
Like he never had before
He was a part of the Jim Crow south
Cause that’s where he was born
That’s what he came home to
It was loaded like a powder horn
He was riding’ on a Greyhound bus
Pulled over in a little ole town
Encountered the Sheriff there
The Sheriff knocked him on the ground
He said boy you’ll call me sir
Show me the respect I’m due
Have you forgotten you’re a black man
Don’t know what the war done to you
The Sheriff beat him in the head
With a Billy almost killed him dead
That ignorant man gouged out his eyes
Isaac Woodard would testify
He was blind til the day he died
They found the sheriff later on
Tried by a white jury in the courtroom
Didn’t take them very long
He was acquitted that afternoon
Isaac on the courthouse steps
Only had this to say
I’m not mad I just feel bad
Then he turned and walked away
The Sheriff beat him in the head
With a Billy almost killed him dead
That ignorant man gouged out his eyes
Isaac Woodard would testify
He was blind til the day he died
