Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer with Chao Tian - Little Betty Ann Kitchen Girl Midu Mountain Song
11. Little Betty Ann/Kitchen Girl/ Midu Mountain Song (Traditional, Arrangement Cathy, Marcy, Chao, 2 Spoons Music, ASCAP) The combination of Chinese dulcimer, five-string clawhammer banjo and four string cello banjo seems to be our secret sauce. “Little Betty Ann” is a hybrid of the traditional song “Shady Grove,” played in a unique tuning on the banjo (f#EADE). Mike Seeger collected this tune from William Bragg and Herbert Alpert, and recorded it on his 1972 album “Music From True Vine.” “Kitchen Girl” comes from the fiddling of Henry Reed of Glen Lyn, VA, collected by Alan Jabour. Chao’s improvisation is based on a Han folk tune from Yunnan Province called “Midu Mountain Song弥渡山歌.” Vocals, Five-String Banjo, Cello-Banjo, Yangqin (Dulcimer)
