Chinese Lady with Aluminum Foil-
This is a true story and a real person that I observed for many months. She was an older Asian lady that would always be sitting at the front of the bus. I commuted to work every day and there she would be sitting minding her own business. I noticed the shiny metallic aluminum foil she wore on her person. I would get on the bus at 7 am and she would be riding. The number 76 bus goes down Valley Boulevard through Alhambra. Alhambra is predominantly Chinese, and Asian ethnicities. The people are very low-key, quiet, and reserved for the most part. The clothing is very bland and almost uniform like. But when I saw the Chinese Lady with Aluminum Foil! I knew she was special! The shiny reflections caught my eye, so one morning I decided I would sit directly in front of her. I wanted to get a closer look but did not want to stare. I stole brief glances when she was not looking. She wore an aluminum-crafted bonnet on her head some days, other days it was shaped like a flat-top helmet. It was so different and strange than any other Asian Lady's wardrobe. Many Asian ladies are covered with masks, face visors, and gloves. Very common I have noticed. Somewhere I heard that they keep themselves protected from the sun, the UV rays that may cause skin cancer. I also heard it might be a social class indicator that tanned Asians were fieldworkers or of lower class status. Asians are humans just like me. Some days she would insert foil into her nostrils and earholes. This was most unusual to me. She didnt care if people gave her dirty looks or looked at her strange. She would wrap her wrists and ankles with foil and keep them intact with rubber bands. Sometimes she would have a thin layer underneath her blouse. I always loved to see the Chinese Lady with Aluminum Foil...
