12. In The Old Red Flag, I was trying to write a song about labor actions that was fun, not a lecture. I had an affectionate phrase in mind, “the old red flag”. Red flags stand for danger, though. But I wanted to bring back the idea that they're also a symbol in the venerable struggle for rights and justice. A marching band with trombones and tubas seemed like a good start.
