Bright Eyes
She lay awake, sprawled on the bed
Piles of clothes barely worn beneath her
The face she painted was smeared and red
As she clutched the phone’s silent receiver

She lets the music begin to play
With the voice that always wrecks her…

she says
Why do I take comfort in misery?
Put on a sad song when I'm sad?
Absence makes the heart grow harder
When it's not happy with what it had
Can't we be happy with what we had?

The clock in her car was five minutes off
But her curfew was the least of her fears
He looked right past her like she wasn’t there
His words piercing her ears

She slips in the tape to hear someone else
explain to her how she feels

she says
Why do I take comfort in misery?
Put on a sad song when I'm sad?
Absence makes the heart grow harder
When it's not happy with what it had
Can't we be happy with what we had?

Bridge:
Oh Bright Eyes

A string of photos lining her wall
Ties all her friendships together
But somehow things come untied
She wonders if this will get better

Why do I take comfort in misery?
Put on a sad song when I'm sad?
Absence makes the heart grow harder
When it's not happy with what it had
Can't we be happy with what we had?
