Last Trip Home
Momma still remembered
When the salmon ran so thick
You could drop a bucket overboard
Almost take your pick
Canneries ran night and day
No one worked alone
What will we do
If it’s the last trip home
This could be the last trip home
In this boat my family left me
This could be the last trip home
In this life we call our own
For their money chokes the water
And their greed pollutes the river
What will we do
If it’s the last trip home
I stand here in the wheelhouse
Staring out at Bristol Bay
A million years to make it
It could vanish in a day
River just a memory
Salmon turned to stone
What will we do
If it’s the last trip home
I think about my children
How will they survive
If all I have to leave them
Is a pit two miles wide
Boats wounded and abandoned
On the Earth’s despoiled bones
What will we do
If it’s the last trip home
What will we do
If it’s the last trip home
