Seventh Generation
When you were born
Made your first cry
Someone stood by
To hold and hear you
From your first breath
To the door of death
With luck you’ll have
A good friend near you
To take your part
To guard your heart
To love you without reservation
So those who come
When you are gone
Will think of you
And carry on
To the seventh generation
But for this earth
Place of our birth
Who will be there
To hear it crying
Who’ll make the choice
Who’ll raise their voice
To shout out loud
“Our earth is dying”
To take a stand
To guard the land
To stand up for its preservation
You’ll need all your strength
Need all your heart
To take your place
To do your part
To the seventh generation
When tempers flare and voices rise
When conversation turns to lies
Between the anger and the fear
It isn’t easy to see clearly
But no ear
Will ever hear
Your whispered voice
So shout out loudly
To take a stand
Just raise your hand
And make a fist
You hold up proudly
It’s up to me
It’s up to you
To stand our watch for all creation
So a hundred years
After we depart
At least they’ll say
We made a start
To the seventh generation
