The Gift
I was a gift to an old man when I was new
People said he was crazy for a while I thought he was too
We worked together on a grand design
But the day the rain came I was left outside
And the water was rising and the world began to weep
Then silence fell like darkness on the deep
I can build it up or I can tear it down
I have no say in anything or in who’s hands I’m found
I have no voice I have no choice I guess it’s just as well
I was only made to drive the nail
There was a man who found me and he saw within me worth
And when I was in his hands it was my greatest work
If only I could feel or I had eyes to see
How we’d change the world this carpenter and me
I can build it up or I can tear it down
I have no say in anything or in who’s hands I’m found
I have no voice I have no choice I guess it’s just as well
I was only made to drive the nail
The day the soldier took me and brought me up a hill
That’s when they used me until the carpenter lay still
I can build it up or I can tear it down
I have no say in anything or in who’s hands I’m found
If I could choose I’d fought for you until that cross had fell
But I was only made to drive the nail
I was only made to drive the nail
There was a man who found me and saw within me worth
