JOHN PRIMER'S BIOGRAPHY
Growing up on Mississippi sharecropper land in 1945, inspired by his family’s deep devotion to spirituals on Sundays, and blues on Saturdays! John dreamed of one day playing with the Legendary Muddy Waters!
Moving to Chicago in 1963, he started on that path of becoming a great bluesman working for tips down on Maxwell Street, then in 1970 getting his first steady gig at the Legendary Theresa’s Lounge. Here John was taught how to play Chicago Blues for 7 years, 7 nights a week! First he caught Willie Dixon’s eye and lead his All Star Band, then John’s dream came true in 1981, his idol, Muddy Waters called for him to lead his band. After Muddy’s untimely death, he joined up with Magic Slim & The Teardrops and lead Slim’s band for the next 13 years, traveling all over the world. John paid his dues and in 1995 he began leading his own Real Deal Blues Band. He recorded on more than 80 albums on more than 6 record labels including his own, Blues House Productions. Earning 2 Grammy Nominations, inducted into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame and given 2 Lifetime Achievement Awards. John is 2021’s Winner of the Blues Music Award for Best Traditional Blues Artist of Year and also the Living Blues Magazine’s Award for Best Traditional Blues Album of the Year! He has also won the Blues Blast Award many times and is nominated for these awards every year. John Primer is a living Chicago Blues Icon and his music is a dying art form.
