This character was from the 1930’s, a depression era protagonist. He was permanent traveler, mostly on trains, but other methods as well. I remember asking Bob Dylan if he’d ever ridden on the rails with hobos. He said he tried it once and it didn’t go well. The song is all a work of imagination. I would no more try jumping on a moving box car than I would try to fly.
