In 1963 I heard both Dave Van Ronk and Bob Dylan sing “He Was A Friend of Mine.” I never sang that song, but a month or so later between sets at the Gaslight in NY, I pulled out my pocket notebook and wrote this. I felt secure about being in touch with the tradition. That notebook is on view, open to this page, with my archives at the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa.
