Sea of South Dakota
Summer days I’ll follow the back roads
and walk past a cabin among the weeds
A flash of sun from off his hammer
The pounding echo of a crazy dream

He’s never seen the deep blue ocean
Just a couple of sad old dusty farms
But now he talks of one obsession
A boat he calls the lost prairie star

And couldn’t you see that rain pouring down
And me right here inside my boat
Sailing away from this watery town
And finally catch that breeze
Hundreds of miles from any ocean
Dreaming of open seas

Upon the Sea of South Dakota
Floating past the bank and general store
With island rooftops barely showing
Waves breaking on the Badland shore

There isn’t much here for adventure
So run aground between two county lines, oh
I think he’s searching for direction
In the pull of some imagined tide

And couldn’t you see that rain pouring down
And me right here inside my boat
Sailing away from this watery town
And finally catch that breeze
Hundreds of miles from any ocean
Dreaming of open seas

Hundreds of miles from any ocean
Dreaming of open seas
