Time to Go
vocal and acoustic guitar by Andy Cohen

notes from Andy Cohen

Steam Train Maurie was an old ‘hobo when Larry Penn was braking for one of the railroads out of Milwaukee. Maurie was a throwback and Larry was no pussyfoot, he was a hobo’s friend. He befriended Maurie along with thousands of other hobos and wannabe hobos who made him King of the Hobos several times. When Maurie took the Westbound, Larry wrote this song in his memory.

I learned the song from Bob and Diana Suckiel, stalwarts of the Kansas City folk scene. They and Larry were real tight. We sang it for Utah Phillips too, and when Larry died, we sang it for him. We were a mess, but we kept singing.
