Trying
Trying
I got clothes in my closet and shoes on my feet
A little cash in my pocket, plenty to eat
You could say, I’m the lucky one

I got a good education but my job don’t pay much
But with three weeks vacation so it pays well enough
I know it’s true, I’m the lucky one

People are crying for freedom or food
And somehow new rocketships go past the moon
I don’t understand it, why some get to choose
And still don’t build towns that are hurricane-proof
All I know, when the lights go low
We keep trying

I grew up by the ocean 10 miles below town
So I watched from the window when that ship went down
You could say, I’m the lucky one

When my uncle went fishing to the bottom he sank
‘Til another went with him and carried him back
And that’s what counts, when it all comes down

People are crying for freedom or food
And somehow the government profits from booze
I don’t understand it, why some get to choose
And still don’t build homes that are alcohol-proof
All I know, when the lights go low
We keep trying

I’ve a brother I don’t know and another I’ve heard
Went a little bit crazy, it’s all so absurd
I’m an only child and I’m one of five

‘Cause 17 years a girl went far away
To the city to work - that’s what they used to say
Oh I know it’s true, for all that she went through
I’m the lucky one

People are crying for freedom or food
And somehow I'm sitin' here singing to you
I don’t understand it, why some get to choose
And others lay dying in hospital rooms
All I know, when the lights go low
We keep trying
We keep trying
