I have always been fascinated by the darker side of country music. This song comes directly from family history. Whether it’s from mine or not I’m not gonna say. This song was recorded in a spur of the moment, free wheelin’ sort of way. We had opened the door at one point and when we hit the record button the birds in the backyard sang right along--without even a rehearsal! and they are Nashville birds you can tell because they are in tune! I imagine they normally charge a lot for a session, but I think they really believed in this song. It was sorta eerie when it happened...like they knew...like they really do keep tabs on you--we all looked at each other after the take and said “Whoa that’s a keeper!”
