Always Knew
I thought that I'd have all the answers
thought there'd be more second chances
sweet surprises and slow dances
and peanut butter chocolate pancakes
I figured I'd live in the city
wear a suit to work
and it'd be easy to know what to do
where to go and who was who
I thought that I could just believe
when they said they believed in me
and I swore I'd never go to sleep
Just stay up late and watch TV

Now for every rule I've had to follow
every truth I've had to swallow
there's another silly notion I outgrew
but I always knew that I would love you
before I ever heard your name or saw your face
in all this blue
I felt so sure there had to be
something golden in this place

I thought I'd read more leather bound books
know how to clean and how to cook
and understand the time it took
to rebuild when my world got shook
I thought I'd have more big ideas
on world hunger, war and peace
and I thought I'd have some bigger dreams
than a good friend to grow old with me

Now for every rule I've had to follow
every truth I've had to swallow
there's another silly notion I outgrew
but I always knew that I would love you
before I ever heard your name or saw your face
in all this blue
I felt so sure there had to be
something golden in this place
