Rabbit
You sit on the back porch and stare at the sky
watching the sun kiss the mountains goodnight
the dog kills a rabbit, only a baby
you cry like a child cause you couldn't save it

later a good friend comes round for a beer
and you laugh at the way these lessons take years
you start a small fire
from junk mail you saved
the clouds start to gather, the flames fight the rain
the sky grows darker
you say please don't go home

And you're rinsing the bottles out in th sink
the water is warm, you can't help but think
that it's easy
it can be easy

Now you painted the walls yellow and blue
and this house is forever
it's like a tattoo
you're living inside it, it's inside of you
and you're settling deeper, hitting the snooze
but how did you get here?
You don't even know
you came in on a feeling
heavy and slow
now you're falling in love just like falling asleep
and summer comes calling
lazy and sweet
the days get shorter
you say please don't go home

You stare at your toes on the same kitchen floor
it hurts you like hell but you're closing the door
and it's easy
sometimes it's so easy

You sit on the back porch and stare at the sky
watching for airplanes as ten years go by
the dog kills a rabbit
you heard it screaming
still there's some part of you prays it went easy
