The Devil
We were sitting in the back seat of your Chevy Cavalier
Tom Petty on the stereo, you whispering in my ear
talking words about forever
I said I don't know what that means
you know I wasn't lying, I was only 17
but my heart grew up around you like a tree grows through a fence
and I learned everything that I knew in the hours that we spent
just trying to fit ourselves together
like the lovers on TV
making promises we thought that we could keep

Now if the Devil ain't a woman then the heart ain't a deep blue sea
and if you didn't see it coming
I guess you're 'bout as blind as you can be/ I guess you never really looked at me
You can cuss and call me names and I won't say your aim ain't true/ you say I wrecked you when I left and I confess that's what I was trying to do
but remember the Devil had to fall once too

Your mother stood there crying as we said our wedding vows
but you couldn't wait a week before you started stepping out
and our bills went unpaid, and our bed grew cold
you could have made a book out of the stories that you told
I said you know I'd never ask you to be something you're not
but that's your seventh whiskey and it ain't even six o'clock
now I may burn if I go and leave you here this way
but I'm gonna freeze if I stay

Now if the Devil ain't a woman then the heart ain't a deep blue sea
and if you didn't see it coming
I guess you're 'bout as blind as you can be/ I guess you never really looked at me
You can cuss and call me names and I won't say your aim ain't true/ you say I wrecked you when I left and I confess that's what I was trying to do
but remember the Devil had to fall once too

I was standing on the dance floor
you were singing with the band
when that ring slipped off my finger into a stranger's hand
and you said what happened to forever, as your eyes were flashing green
I said I thought I told you baby, I just don't know what that means
even though I love you still
you son of a **** I probably always will
but all those nights I spent alone
I was just learning from the only love I've known

Now if the Devil ain't a woman then the heart ain't a deep blue sea
and if you didn't see it coming
I guess you're 'bout as blind as you can be/ I guess you never really looked at me
You can cuss and call me names and I won't say your aim ain't true/ you say I wrecked you when I left and I confess that's what I was trying to do
but remember the Devil had to fall once too
