Kate MacLeod - Come Fare Away With Me
“’Come Fare Away With Me,’ previously recorded by many other artists, is sometimes titled as ‘Marnie,’” says Kate MacLeod, who has released it as the third song in her The Jean Ritchie Experience project. “I learned it from older recordings, while also referring to the music notation and lyrics that can be found in Jean Ritchie’s songbook, Celebration of Life. Written in a traditional folk song format, it could easily be mistaken for a traditional song. It’s common for Jean’s original songs to be indistinguishable from traditional folk songs, one of the many fascinating aspects and charms of her compositions. Fitting into the categories of seafaring and emigration stories, it’s an optimistic invitation to join someone for a new life in a new homeland. I've sung this song in various formats over the years, but have arranged it solely for this project with the help of singers Paul Hammerton, Morgan Morrison, and Stephanie Thompson. I included my ukulele, which was made in Hawaii, and an acoustic electric guitar on the track. The cover art features a painting I created for ‘Come Fare Away With Me.’”QZ9272200002
