Marianne Flemming - Another New Year
“This song is a lament, a prayer, and a tribute for all who hang in there on the eve of ‘Another New Year,’” explains Marianne Flemming, the 30-year veteran songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist. While it is an up-tempo folk song with a Calypso beat, “Another New Year” reflects on what can seem like the unending tragedy humans face and inflict on each other. The song features Yasha Noonberg on bass, pedal steel, and percussion with Marianne on vocals and guitars.

Noonberg also recorded and mixed this song.
Across the Universe, the fifth album by Flemming, peaked at #32 on the Folk Alliance International Album Chart for July 2022. “Another New Year” originally appeared on her 2014 release, Pure and Simple. Mark S. Tucker wrote in Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange: “almost a perfect mutant of Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Basia, and a couple others I can't quite pinpoint. Flemming composes very well, but her guitar playing ain't anything to sneeze at either, with Yascha Noonberg complementing everything beautifully.”

From The Bluebird Café in Nashville to The Bitter End in New York and Seattle's Folk Life stage, Flemming has appeared across the USA, in the Caribbean, and in Europe where Bo Diddley once joined her when she was busking in Hyde Park. Finding her own sound among a jazz-inflected, sinuous voice reminiscent of Rickie Lee Jones and Natalie Merchant, the solid folk sensibility of Janis Ian, and the straight-ahead emotionalism of Patty Griffin, Flemming has been writing and performing memorable lyrics and melodies for many years. Currently residing in southwestern Washington, Marianne balances her day job as a special education teacher, her two teenagers, and her music obsession. She continues to perform, write, and record, sometimes performing with Kevin Neil as the “The Billy Novas.”
