Shelton & Williams - Wasted on the Way
Shelton & Williams formed just before the onset of the pandemic as a trio of veteran musicians Jay Shelton, Jeanette Williams, and Johnny Williams. “Wasted on the Way” provides an advance taste of their 2022 album, So Much Time, So Much Love.
"Our first knowledge of ‘Wasted on the Way,’ written by Graham Nash, was the performance by Crosby, Stills, and Nash,” explains Johnny Williams. “The song is a reflection of life as it passes by, asking questions each of us think of from time to time. When choosing songs for our project this song came to mind at the beginning. It features the band's three part harmony. This is what we are known for, so it was a natural fit.
“In these challenging times, our thoughts are often pulled in many unsettling directions. We were drawn to the message in this song which reminds us - don’t wait to do the things that make you happy. Treasure precious time with loved ones. Let’s stop wasting our time and our love, and get to the business of living!”
Jay Shelton & the Williamses formed Shelton & Williams in early 2020. Although it started as a trio, it sometimes performs with special guests. The band’s material ranges across a variety of styles and sources from original compositions, classic country, gospel, blues, and traditional and progressive bluegrass. All three are songwriters and seasoned vocalists based in Danville ("Wreck of the Old 97") Virginia.
Jay Shelton was on the bluegrass scene in the 70’s & 80’s as a lead singer and lead guitarist. He changed direction and fronted a rock band for many years. Afterwards he became a singer songwriter performing solo concerts. In 2019 he returned to bluegrass. An accomplished lead guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist, he recorded his first project Home (featuring Jeanette & Johnny Williams) in 2021.
Jeanette Williams plays bass and shares vocals with the band. She has sixteen SPBGMA nominations thru 2019 and three wins for Female Vocalist of the Year (2009, 2012 and 2013), two IBMA awards (2006 and 2009 Recorded Event of the Year, with the Daughters Of Bluegrass) two songwriting wins (2007 Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at MerleFest, 2008 IAMA Songwriting Contest) to her credit.
Johnny Williams plays rhythm guitar, shares vocals, and contributes his original material. An award winning singer and songwriter, he has been named Virginia State Champion Male Vocalist, PICABO Male Vocalist (twice), and PICABO Songwriter of the Year. He was the bluegrass division winner of the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest in1998 & 1999. A finalist for the SPBGMA male vocalist the past two years, his songs have been chosen three times for the IBMA songwriting showcase.
