Biography
Jacob Underwood is a multi-instrumentalist who plays banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and guitar. He began singing on stage at age three, when he, after hearing his dad play, also took an interest in the mandolin. He began taking piano lessons at age five, but soon turned his focus to mandolin and fiddle at age eight. In 2007, at age 11, he became a full time member of Bluegrass Express, replacing Jeff Midkiff. Two years later, he began playing banjo. In 2013, When National Mandolin and Guitar Champion Andy Hatfield joined Bluegrass Express, Jacob switched to banjo as his primary instrument. The same year, he released his first solo recording, "Grass Clippings," on which, he played all the instruments on all the cuts. Fall of 2015 brought the release of his second solo project, which features such special guests as Matt Wallace, Steve Thomas, Sierra Hull, Ron Stewart, Greg Underwood, Mike Scott, Tim Crouch, and Justin Moses. Summer 2020 will bring the release of his project "As Time Goes By," which features bluegrass versions of 1930s-1950s pop and jazz hits.
