A 100th Anniversary Tribute

Sept 13, 1911 – Sept 9, 1996

I am honored to have produced and performed on this 100th Anniversary Tribute project to Bill Monroe, “The Father of Bluegrass.” At the onset, it was my goal to capture a bluegrass sound that Bill would be proud of; a sound that runs deep in heritage and is true to tradition. With hand selected music greats such as Brian Sutton, Aubrey Haynie, Adam Steffey, Tim Stafford, Mike Compton, Ben Isaacs, and Rob Ickes, it wasn’t difficult. The sessions were more than fun as tunes were laid down with great excellence and seemingly little effort. In a sense, we are all “Bluegrass Boys.” Bill mentored us well.

I was fortunate enough to have started in the music business at the young age ten. My Mom & Dad bought my first banjo for me the Christmas of 1972 after having seen one at my Uncles house just a few weeks prior. I was hooked. All through my school years I would save my lunch money, trade pocket knives (you could do that back then), anything I could trade in order to get LP records that had banjo recordings on them. That’s where I got many of my Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and Jim & Jesse records. I learned early on, from these recordings, that this is what I wanted to do. I wanted to play music professionally as my career.

Bill’s Music, along with many others, taught me how to play melody, tone, and timing. That is something that’s often neglected in complementing a song or tune. I was fortunate to have been on stage with Bill and other top performers at eleven and twelve years old. You never forget, especially as a kid, those who took time for you. Bill Monroe took time for me. We became “Bluegrass Buddies” early on. I was honored to have been asked by Bill to become a “Bluegrass Boy” in his band at fifteen years old. After some serious thought and prayer about the move, my parents and I decided that I should finish high school. After graduation, I joined Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys in 1983 and moved to Nashville. My very first performance with them was on The Grand Ole Opry, where I’ve been honored to perform many times since.

Although I was never a Bluegrass Boy, my relationship with Bill only grew stronger. I recall the numerous times we took turns buying each other meals, either out on the road where we were playing at the same venues, or at a the Mason’s Restaurant near his farm in Goodlettsville, TN. He would call me up and want to get together to have breakfast or lunch. It was mostly breakfast because we were both early risers. He would say, “Come on down and meet me for some breakfast. Let’s have some hen eggs and ham, it’s my turn to buy.” I would argue that it was my turn, but it never really mattered. It was time we got to spend together.

I’m honored and privileged to have performed at several music venues alongside of Bill, including The Grand Ole Opry, numerous bluegrass festivals, and several television shows including the CBS 60th Anniversary Tribute to the Grand Ole Opry, The Legends of Bluegrass on PBS Austin City Limits, Opry Live & Nashville Now, and The Cannery.

I have so many special memories of Bill Monroe. I really miss him as a performer, a music icon, and mostly a friend. I hope you enjoy this 100th Anniversary Tribute to him. It includes some of Bill’s own tunes along with other great bluegrass instrumentals.

Now, “let’s have some hen eggs and ham” and enjoy some traditional bluegrass music. By the way, “it’s your turn to buy!”
