Biography
The Blue Plate Specials are a 5-piece Jump Blues band with smoking tunes and tight arrangements. When they hit the stage, the party starts and the joint jumps until closing time.
The band has been gaining fans and honing its chops since 2008, by playing some of the finest venues and Festivals in the Northeast United States like the Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, PA, The State Theater in Boyertown, PA, The Paoli Blues Festival in Paoli, PA, The Twisted Tail in Philadelphia, PA, The Lancaster Roots and Blues Festival and many private functions in the tri-state area.
The band is fronted by Charlie Frey, guitarist, songwriter and vocalist; and is backed by Ted Hordeski (drums) , Walter Beier (saxophone), Alan Sheltzer (Keys) and Ken Bernardo (bass).
After hearing a recording of the bands live show, Lanark Records signed the band and brought them into their Lancaster, PA studio to record the band’s first full-length album. Lanark paired the band with established Americana producer Quentin Jones (Robert Gordon, Charlie Gracie, the Rockats, Billy J Kramer, Nick Kane) to cut 11 new tracks including “I Need a Car,” which has already been featured on Car Talk on NPR!
The Blue Plate Specials can Jump, Swing, Boogie and Rock with the best of them. Their music is reminiscent not only of the big Blues bands with horns and keys (BB King, T-Bone Walker, Louis Jordan), but they can rip through hot rockers that sound like George Thorogood or Bo Diddley one minute, and slip into a Big Band-style Swing that will remind you of Count Basie or Woody Herman the next.
