Biography

There are multiple ways of describing Portia Young. Whenever you mention her name, you have virtually opened several topics for discussion; Portia is an Independent Christian Recording Artist, Song Writer, Arranger, Psalmist Teacher and Nutrition Educator.

After becoming a member at her local church, Living Word Christian Center, Pastor Bill Winston, she joined the praise and worship team. There she later became one of the praise and worship team leaders. In extension of her musical gifts, Portia participated in her local churches SOW-A-CD project which is comprised of a 3-CD production by Morris Butch Stewart, for Good Stewart Productions and BIG JOE RECORDS. There she made her contribution as a writer and lead vocalist on the song entitled, All Glory Honor and Praise and writer of the songs entitled Just Because I Believe and Crossing Over to the Other Side. She also sang background vocals on a significant portion of the project. She has also participated in writing and recording songs used in biblical dramas.

Portia's CD release IM READY NOW, harnesses the unique and artistic sound of this aggressive tyro. This project consists of Inspirational/Gospel songs that bring hope and solace to the listeners. The songs range from worship adoration and praise with a twist of salsa to a touch of hip-hop flava, and a sound of smooth jazz, all the way back down home with a mixed medley hymnal. Positively a must have for those who can appreciate the word of God through songs.

Portia was featured on the new artist showcase of the Sunday Morning Spirit of Love and Inspiration Gospel Show which was aired on 107.5 WGCI FM Chicago radio station with hostess, Effie Rolfe. Portia has been featured on the Tecora Rodgers show, which airs on Monday nights weekly at 10:00 p.m. on Chicago Access Cable channel 19. The CD I'M READY NOW, was incepted on Indy’s newest Christian radio station, WHTJ 1690-AM, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Portia was a guest independent artist on the 3rd annual season taping of THE GOSPEL OF MUSIC with JEFF MAJORS" for TV One, a national cable and satellite television broadcast. The taping took place in Hollywood California and is currently aired in rotation on TV One.. Portia toured parts of Italy on a 23-night Christmas concert tour along with the Gospel Group Chicago Spirituals. Being inspired by the tour, Portia released a Christmas CD entitled "Christmas, A Very Special Time of the Year with the featured titled song, "Special Time of the Year. Portia appeared on CBS Channel 2 Chicago on the "Holiday Songs" Christmas Special, featuring her title CD song "Special Time of the Year and her re-arrangement of "Do You Hear What I Hear". Portia has made appearances for the last two years at The Mall of America's Christmas Festival featuring songs from her Christmas release.
