Biography
JIM GREER & THE MAC-O-CHEE VALLEY FOLKS – STARS OF THE WWVA JAMBOREE
Born James Marvin Greer, 3 September 1942, West Liberty, Logan County, Ohio, USA. Greer was attracted to country music by his sisters, Bonnie and Valeda, who, as the Greer Sisters, sang on several stations in the 50s, including the Renfro Valley Barn Dance, on WLW Cincinnati. After learning banjo, guitar and mandolin, he played with them, until Bonnie tired of the travelling and they disbanded.
Greer then formed his Mac-O-Chee Valley Folks, which featured himself on banjo, sister Valeda (guitar), Bob McPherson (guitar, mandolin), Dalton Burroughs (bass), Valeda's husband John Wentz (dobro) and Aaron Hicks (fiddle). They played bluegrass and traditional music, plus a few numbers written by McPherson, as a semi-professional group appearing at various local shows or bluegrass festivals. Between 1965 and 1969, they also played weekly on Jamboree USA at WWVA Wheeling, West Virginia.
In the mid to late 60’s Jim Greer & The Mac-O-Chee Valley Folks recorded three albums for Uncle Jim O'Neal's Rural Rhythm label; “Log Cabin Favorites” released in 1965, this album “The Stars of the WWVA Jamboree” released in 1966 and “Stars of the WWVA, Volume 2” released in 1967”.
