EARWIG MUSIC DELIVERS A COMPELLING SELECTION OF CATALOG TITLES TO GLOBAL RADIO
Posted on October 1, 2022
This month Earwig Music puts the spotlight on its diverse songwriters. One of the label’s core values has been to encourage artists deeply rooted in tradition to write new tunes without being root-bound, capturing the essence of the artist.
Featured Artist Les Copeland, a brilliant guitarist with diverse tastes in music, came to the label’s attention after Les met Honeyboy Edwards at a festival in British Columbia in 2003. That led to multiple Canadian tours with Les, Honeyboy and Michael Frank (Earwig CEO and a harmonica player) and Michael’s dedication to recording Les, to bring to a global audience his magnificent guitar playing, his diverse influences and his cool tunes.
Les is a great jazz player, so his next Earwig album will have some jazz guitar as well as more of Les’s blues and Americana songwriting. The other albums in this month’s Earwig picks show multiple generations of styles and songwriting approaches, too many to discuss here. Our picks Johnny Drummer, Aron Burton and Liz Mandeville Greeson have some similarities in musical styles and songwriting influences, but they have their own distinctive recipes putting it all together.
They were all mostly doing cover tunes when Michael Frank, Owner & CEO – Earwig Music, first heard them in the Chicago clubs. Johnny’s tune “Ain’t No Secret in a Small Town”, from his 3rd Earwig album Rockin’ In the Juke Joint, won the International Songwriting Competition in the blues category a couple years ago. Liz wanted to make a blues covers album but Michael was so impressed with her clever, soulful originals that he produced 4 albums on Earwig with only Liz’s songs. Aron’s album Aron Burton Live demonstrates his ability to draw the audience in, with his universal themes and keen observations about life. He’s also a master of the audience sing-a-long.
