REBEL RECORDS DIGS DEEP INTO THEIR RICH HISTORY AND GROUND-BREAKING CATALOGUE

“Rebel Records has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating bluegrass recording label in the world. With a legacy that spans six decades, Rebel’s catalog cuts a large swath through bluegrass music’s rich and storied history. With longevity has come a portfolio that spans everything from early classics by the music’s founders to the most contemporary of today’s standard bearers.
This month, we are spotlighting the foundational performers of yesteryear. Special attention is given to Mac Wiseman’sBluegrass Hits and Heartsongs. Recorded in the early 1970s, the album features nifty remakes of Wiseman’s best-known classics. The Stanley Brothers On Radio finds Carter and Ralph in top form as they sounded in 1960 when performing for their sponsor, Jim Walter Homes. In 1955, Josh Graves made bluegrass history when he added the sound of the Dobro to bluegrass. Graves was a direct influence on today’s Dobro powerhouse Jerry Douglas, and his self-titled Josh Graves disc is a prime example of his Dobro mastery.
The Lilly Brothers illustrate bluegrass, brother-style harmony singing at its best. Recorded in 1957 and originally released on an obscure and poorly distributed label, Rebel’s packaging of their Early Recordings makes these gems widely available for the first time. Bluegrass historians typically cite Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, and the duo of Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs as the holy trinity of bluegrass. Nipping closely at the trio’s heels was the team of Don Reno & Red Smiley. In the waning days of their career (Smiley died in 1972 at the young age of 46), the pair recorded two introspective discs that showcased their superlative duet harmonies: Songs From Yesterday and Together Again.
Jim Eanes fronted one of the best regional bluegrass bands of the 1950s. Although Eanes mainly scored with secular songs, his sacred In His Arms is the footing for an album of inspirational material. Red Allen possessed one of the most cutting-edge voices in bluegrass. In the early 1960s he recorded four albums of hard-core traditional material. Today, those songs appear on two CDs as Keep On Going and Lonesome And Blue. Mellow-voiced Charlie Moore penned one of bluegrass music’s most popular songs, “The Legend of the Rebel Soldier”; it’s the title track to his Original Rebel Soldier disc.” ~ Mark Freeman, President – Rebel Record
