REBEL RECORDS DELIVERS ANOTHER GREAT COLLECTION OF CATALOGUE TO GLOBAL RADIO

Posted on September 18, 2020

“Rebel is known as the home of heavy hitters in bluegrass. Ralph Stanley, the Seldom Scene, the Country Gentlemen, Rhonda Vincent, and Claire Lynch are among those who have some of their finest recordings with the label. But Rebel is also an incubator that provided a platform that launched many a bluegrass career. The venerable Lost & Found weren’t exactly newcomers when they came to Rebel, but their 40-year tenure has earned them legendary status. This is exemplified on their retrospective Classic Bluegrass collection.

IIrd Tyme Out, headed by award-winning vocalist Russell Moore, burst out of the chute in 1991 with a stellar self-titled disc, IIIrd Tyme Out. Singer/songwriter Ronnie Bowman apprenticed in several key bands including the Lost & Found and the Lonesome River Band before showcasing his solo talents with the 1994 disc – and 1995 IBMA Album of the Year winner – Cold Virginia Night.

Chris Jones wears many hats including radio personality, performer, songwriter, and bandleader. His No One But You displays the talents of his group, the Night Drivers, as well as his mellow vocals and introspective original songs. The Wildwood Valley Boys come by their bluegrass naturally; leader Tony Holt’s father was the front man for the popular Boys From Indiana. Like father, like son, the Wildwood’s When I Get Back to Georgia is top-flight bluegrass. The self-titled Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show is a prime example of classic 1950s bluegrass being repurposed for a modern audience.

Sometimes bands come about just for the joy of making music together. Such was the case with two supergroups: Rock County and Longview. Both outfits featured top-shelf pickers and singers, all of whom had been friends for years, but who led careers separate from each other. Rock County’s self-titled disc featured ace fiddler Glen Duncan and mandolin player Don Rigsby while Longview’s Lessons in Stone contained notables such as Dudley Connell, James King, Joe Mullins, and Marshall Wilborn. David Davis and The Warrior River Boys serves up Alabama bluegrass at its best. Davis’ uncle, Cleo Davis, was a charter member of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in 1939. Switching from the deep South, Virginia’s Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice sports a definite nod to the music of the Stanley Brothers. Sisk’s heartfelt vocals are front and center on Blue Side Of The Blue Ridge.”
