REBEL RECORDS OPENS THE DOOR TO THEIR MUSICAL VAULT

“For the month of July, I am spotlighting key titles from Rebel’s successful budget-priced “Vault Masters” series. The Rebel catalog – sixty years old and counting – includes virtually all of the top names in bluegrass, and the purpose behind the Vault Masters series was to put that massive catalog to good use. It consists of CDs that were curated for the express purpose of making great music available at a great price. The series is a mixture of front-line artists and lesser-known but no-less important acts. Several collections that feature vintage vault tracks are digitized here for the first time.

While most of the releases are devoted to a single artist, there are several star-studded various artists collections. Chief among them is With Body and Soul: A Bluegrass Tribute to Bill Monroe. Among the heavy hitters are Mac Wiseman, the Seldom Scene, America’s fascination with the long steel rail; “City of New Orleans,” “Greenville Trestle High,” and “Steel Rails” are but a few of the favorites. Dark as a Dungeon: Songs of the Mines features a definitive Seldom Scene rendering of the John Prine classic “Paradise.”

A key component of the best Rebel artists is songwriting, as witnessed in projects such as Dave Evans – The Best of the Vetco Years, Boys From Indiana – Good Time Blues, and Larry Rice – If You Only Knew. Evans was a powerful singer who apprenticed under Larry Sparks before launching his own solo career. Prolific composer Aubrey Holt contributed ten of the fourteen tracks on the Boys From Indiana disc, including the poignant Civil War lament “Atlanta is Burning.” Although sometimes overshadowed by older brother/guitar legend Tony, Larry Rice was a superb multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter in his own right.

The Easter Brothers (They’re Holding Up The Ladder) are legends in bluegrass gospel music with a career that dates back to the 1950s. Family harmony is hard to beat and the McPeak Brothers “best of” collection Yesteryears is a textbook example. Despite his “bad boy” image, instrumental prodigy Jimmy Arnold was a serious, sensitive artist with a restless spirit; his gristling energy permeates Riding With Ol’ Mosby. The Traditional Grass burst on the scene in the 1990s with the message that there was still plenty of life in the classic bluegrass mold and their The Blues Are Still The Blues shows why.”
