The winner of the AirPlay Direct “All Things DigitalAmericana / Folk / Bluegrass” artist contest is Austin

Collins! When asked why Austin Collins chose to name his sophomore effort “Roses Are Black,” Collins simply replied, “If something is dark, it doesn’t mean it’s not beautiful.” That statement represents Roses Are Black in its entirety. It contains a deeply personal and cathartic vision of Austin’s thoughts, be they dark or not. This most recent work characterizes the ultimate expression of Collins’ tumultuous and beleaguered lyrical style, and it succeeds vibrantly at portraying a shadow-world made up of personal experiences.

Without hindsight or regrets, Collins intentionally set out to record his second album differently than his first in order to mark the significant growth in his own musical experience. Spearheading the sophomore effort, producer Will Johnson paints an organic, natural sound that distances itself from Something Better. “On Roses Are Black, I made a conscious effort to have it sound grittier and less polished,” said Collins. This choice has made Roses Are Black into a graceful album with room for Collins’ unique take on the traditional waltzes and serenades.

AIRPLAY DIRECT’S FEATURED ARTISTS

FOR JUNE
You know it when you hear it – a song or sound that strikes a rare balance between brilliantly fresh and disarmingly familiar. Maybe it’s the deeply resonant imagery of “Grandpa’s Barn,” the arresting sibling harmonies on “Raining On The Roses” or the searing guitar of “We’re Gonna Get There.”

That instant of discovery – “Where did this come from?” – is what every music fan craves. And while new country duo The Roys are turning heads with their Pedestal debut, those bolt-from-the-blue reactions are the product of a hard-earned education and a lifetime of musical devotion.

This alt-indie pop siren’s engaging live energy captures you right between the ears with a voice that moves you to stay and listen. Whether its a quirky tune played on an odd 80’s electronic toy autoharp, or the rich layers of melodic guitar, synth & piano weaving through her complex lyrics, her songs always manage to deliver both a classic familiarity and uncharted freshness.

With over 25 songwriting awards and nominations, Casey has written and recorded with such luminaries as multi Gold and Platinum Producer Anthony J Resta (Collective Soul, Shawn Mullins, Duran Duran) Grammy winner Will Ackerman, Peter Gabriels’ Tony Levin, Bryan Carrigan, Chris Fogel & more.

She’s performed at colleges & venues all over the country as well as the following festivals: CMJ, Virgin College Mega Tour, Sundance Film Festival , South Park, London Calling, MMS, MPMF, Head of the Charles Regatta, NACA, COCA, DBMC, Chickfest, Collegefest, Intl. Folk Alliance, NAMM, & DFEST.

Tore Andersen is today one of Norways most prominent country artists. He picked up the guitar at an early age, and turned to country music in his late teens. After touring for a decade with the likes of Ottar “Big Hand” Johansen and Bjoro Haaland (both Norwegian household names), he recorded his debut album, “The Hero In Me”, in Nashville in 1992. That being a contemporary country record, he later has added more of an americana flavour to his music, and his last two solo albums “Tore Andersen”, and the most recent “Right Around The Corner”, mixes traditional country with rock, pop and bluegrass his own unique way.

Tore Andersen has had quite a few of his songs cut by other artists, both in Norway and internationally, and he frequently travels to the US to co-write with the likes of hit-writers Byron Hill and Kathy Louvin. Listen to and download “broadcast-quality” tracks at http://www.airplaydirect.com/ToreAndersen

Leading its new generation of artists is a group that appropriately calls itself THIS IS A SHAKEDOWN! Fusing together influences drawn from playing in mostly punk, heavy rock acts and listening to an eclectic range of music from gospel to R&B to hip-hop and underground dance music, THIS IS A SHAKEDOWN! has created its own intoxicating blend of rock instruments and electronics. Its goal above all: to get your blood pumping and your body moving.

“It’s music you can bang to,” says vocalist/guitarist Brandon Zano. “It’s very sexually driven.” Adds bassist Daniel Lee, “There’s definitely a lot of adrenaline.”

American Songwriter Magazine Album Review by Paul Zollo (Conversations With Tom Petty, Songwriters On Songwriting)

“Songs of timeless appeal that shine with the spirit of authentic Americana. Beautiful, compelling melodies with poignant lyrics sung with a sensual, sultry authority that hovers somewhere between Aimee Mann and Chrissie Hynde. Manda’s songs reflect a woman’s perception of love and life, but it’s an empowered vision that shimmers in the tilt of the words and the zen vigor of the vocals. Almost all of the songs are co-written with an assembly of gifted tunesmiths (including Cody LePow and Guy Erez, the producer) but are united by a tender compassion and singular focus. The title song is slinky and arch; it’s funny and mysterious, catchy but not cloying. Manda knows her way around a catchy hook, but does so with genuine heart and no scarcity of soul. Erez’s production and musicianship throughout is solid and ideal – propulsive tapestry drum rhythms underscore rich, real textures of guitars, keys and harmonica. An absolutely stunning cover of Pete Townshend’s “Blue, Red And Grey” is a delightful surprise, a brew of desire, grace and whimsy from an artist whose time has come. This is good, this is now.”

Drawing on juke-joint blues, swampy-groove country and a lot of rock and roll, with stops in gospel and beat-poet territory along the way, DADDY (Will Kimbrough & Tommy Womack) has been hailed by critics and fans alike for their incendiary live performances and recordings that embrace a wide scope of what’s great about American music. Together, Kimbrough and Womack just click.

Kimbrough’s wide-ranging abilities, sweet and reckless by turns, dovetails with Womack’s slash-and-burn style to produce a sound that is both exciting and heartfelt. Kimbrough (2005 Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year) and Womack (Two-time winner of the Nashville Scene Best Song Award) first came together in 1992 in the bis-quits, who made one impressive guitar-fest record for John Prine’s Oh-Boy! label. They discovered a musical and personal kinship that has continued to grow over the years – which is now DADDY.

Not your usual band, this father-daughter duo first collaborated 18 years ago when Emily was 4 years old, with the lyrics: “You get the cup and I’ll get the water, you be the Daddy and I’ll be the daughter.” Since then Emily and Scott have worked hard to hone their song-crafting skills.

Scott and Emily’s voices blend magically, with Emily’s rich, comfortable, subtly unique harmonies making every song memorable…songs you’ll find yourself humming even days later.

In the City of Angels it is easy to get lost or over looked, but then it’s hard to overlook a shooting star. They have a way of exploding without warning, something singer/songwriter Clay DuBose is known for. He’s been winning fans all over the world with his refreshing blend of country, rock and blues for a few years now. Like the basics of love his current release “These Days” brings us back to the basics of music. It is a rocking country album with some good old fashioned Texas swing and honky tonk. It reached #6 on Radio & Record’s Americana Chart, at the time being the highest position ever achieved by an Indie artist. It made the “Top 40” albums of the year on the AMA/R&R Americana AirPlay Chart and is a musical journey featuring guest appearances by Garth Hudson, The Derailers, Rami Jaffee of The Wallflowers, Augie Meyers, Will Ray and many others. We just simply call it Clay Country.

Tall, broad-shouldered and clear-eyed, Stephen Dale commands the stage with the confidence and sure-footedness of the construction worker and horse trainer he once was. He seems born to the spotlight. But that’s not the way his story unfolds. In 2005, when Dale was working construction in western Pennsylvania, something transformative happened. He and a friend were in his truck when Dale absent-mindedly began singing along with the radio. His friend was amazed at what he heard. He was so moved by Dale’s vocal power that he pleaded with him to sing for other people-to take his talent to the stage.Dale found a vocal coach, Jan Smith, in Atlanta, of all places, and began driving back and forth from Pennsylvania to Georgia “two or three times a month” for lessons. “Along the way,” he continues, “I would hit every open mic night I could find.” Later, Dale persuaded Smith to help him produce his first and current album, Longshot.

In 2008, Dale moved to a ranch at Hurricane Mills a few miles west of Nashville. Although he’s a fairly new face on the horizon, he’s making fans fast. He’s been profiled in Country Weekly, America’s foremost country music magazine. The publication also offered a song from Longshot as a free download. Recently, Dale headlined a songwriter’s night at the legendary Nashville Palace-and absolutely wowed the crowd.
