5. HAIRDRYIN’ DRUMMER MAN
Been on the road long as he could remember.
Blues, rock and soul, January to December.
Sometimes the work was thin and then it was fat.
Lost his wife along the way, never got over that.
He had his habits, some of rhythm so hot.
Busted mid-gig for stuff, someone called the cops.
He was a pro, begged to finish the show.
But the drug squad was heavy, so of course they said no.

Hard drumming man, always driving the band.
Before the show began, hairdryer in his hand.
Every night between the sets, combing over what was left.
(Rolling up his fags, on his old music mags.)
(Always first to the bus, and he never made a fuss, living on through all of us.)
Hairdryin’ Drummer Man.

Died from a speedball but survived this big fall.
When he returned, surprising he could play at all.
The chops came back; he was stirring up a storm
Just the right vibe to keep the crowds warm.
Cash in his snare, in his old Berlin pad.
Spent on wine books and records, don’t sound so bad.
Might have been quite lonely, with no girls around.
But all his heart and passion went into that famous sound.

He played the drums like no one else, his feel was really special.
He gave the music everything, and we’re gonna miss him.

Made it to seventy, then cancer came along.
Almost time to quit the stage and run the last song.
Always will remember, that last great gig together.
Can't forget the way he played, never never never.
