Artist: Bettman & Halpin Fiddlin’ Lizard Records: FLR-CD 606
Album: Merry Christmas Release Date: Dec 1st, 2015
After seven years of touring, Bettman & Halpin have three studio releases reaching the top five on the Folk DJ as well as number 1 song, and number 3 record on the Roots Music Report, a live album, and an autobiographical documentary, which aired on Public TV in Los Angeles in 2012. Bettman & Halpin (artists Stephanie Bettman and Luke Halpin) are releasing their fifth CD, “Merry Christmas”. This is the duo’s first ever holiday CD, and it features 4 original holiday songs written by Ms Bettman, along with 8 traditional (and slightly less traditional) cover tunes.
With “Merry Christmas” Bettman & Halpin set out to create a CD that would capture the nostalgia and classic feel of their favorite holiday CDs, such as Vince Guaraldi’s “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and harkening back to Bing Crosby and more recently Michael Buble. B & H have crafted delightful arrangements of songs like “Blue Christmas” (made famous by Elvis Presley) featuring whimsical clarinet by Rob Hardt with Ms Bettman playing fiddle as if she is channeling Stephen Grappelli himself. “River” by Joni Mitchell is given a moody emotional treatment, and “Silver Bells” just shimmers with Bettman & Halpin’s signature harmonies and beautiful arrangement. Not forgetting their bluegrass roots, Mr Halpin goes to town on the uptempo pick-fest of “The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”, and Bettman’s original, “We’ll Miss You Mama” is uproarious and impressive.
Bettman & Halpin met as Stephanie Bettman & Luke Halpin in Los Angeles in 2007. That year they played the Sedona Bluegrass Festival and not long after that they started touring as a duo. Stephanie Bettman has an extensive background in theater and aerial arts, and was trained classically both on the violin and voice. She has a degree from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Luke Halpin is a self taught master multi-instrumentalist and harmony singer. He was a member of his family’s band “The Phancy Clan Band” from the age of eight, and has never stopped playing since then. He has shared the stage and opened for greats and legends such as Charlie Daniels, Merle Haggard, and Lone Star.
