Biography
Just one year from his release of Distilled Influences, Stan Martin continues to ignite attention from the Country music world as he returns from Nashville after the recording of his fifth studio album Nashville Sessions Volume 1. Mr. Nashville himself, Billy Block, not only introduced Martin as a friend and one of his favorite country songwriters but described him as, “triple threat Stan Martin who plays Tele like Pete Anderson, sings like Dwight Yoakam and writes like his own self.”

Martin is hitting full stride and his “less is more” attitude, preferring to strip things down to the roots; a process that began on the 2012 release of Distilled Influences, is continuing to manifest itself on his new recordings. “This is the most fun I’ve had in the Studio! Setting up mics, having the band gathered in one room and going for it while putting it down on 2 inch tape allows for that raw, in the moment, feeling to be captured; reminiscent of the way things use to be done,” says Martin. “Making music for music sake and not trying to be Pro Tool perfect for perfection sake is freeing. This album breathes. In all honesty, I should have been doing this from the get go,” he adds.

Stan Martin grew up in an inner city project in South Boston and though far from the mainstream, he still fell in love with the music of Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Porter Wagner and the Stanley Brothers as a young boy. “I grew up very poor but that was no different than growing up poor in any other part of the country. Poor is poor,” he says. His mom, who played in local bluegrass and country bands, exposed him to these great artists through her record collection. “My earliest recollection is listening to Marty Robbins, El Paso. That was my favorite.” He recalls. At the age of 14, Stan picked up the guitar and taught himself to play. By 15, he was hitting the honky tonk bars! “I was never in search of a genre,” he states. “I lived country music as a kid so I played country music and still live and play country music today.” Stan played lead guitar for mainstay country rockers, The Merles, and for award winning New England singer/songwriter, John Lincoln Wright and the Sour Mash Boys. An invitation and a trip to Warner Brothers, after arranging and producing a Demo for a local singer/songwriter, spurred Martin to write, produce and record his own songs while continuing to master his passion; guitar playing.

Stan Martin has not gone unnoticed and accolades have come from high places. Rick Allen, renowned writer for Vintage Guitar Magazine wrote, “Stan Martin’s music is a celebration of what’s best about country music. His rolling, popping Telecaster runs are the kinds that cause players to adopt that beloved plank as their ax of choice. This boy sure can play.” Martin’s album Cigarettes and Cheap Whiskey pinnacled at #1 on XM Satellite Radio X-Country for 3 weeks and remained in the Top 5 for 18 weeks. The recognition he has received from the press and from his peers has afforded him a wealth of opportunities including performances at SXSW and a resume’ that includes opening and sharing the stage with such legendary performers as Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Patty Loveless, Billy Joe Shaver, Jim Lauderdale, and Martina McBride. He has performed at music festivals around the world such as headlining at the Festival de Crappone with Elizabeth Cook, The Derailers and Bill Kirchen and most recently the Ydre Country Festival in Sweden.

Stan joins talents with legendary bass player for the late Johnny Cash, Dave Roe, for his new studio recording Nashville Sessions Volume 1. Dave was the catalyst who convinced Stan he should “come on down to Nashville” to record this new album. The two long-time friends co-produced Nashville Sessions Volume 1 which will see a release in the spring of 2014. “Dave and I have performed a bunch of live shows together but to work with him in the studio as both my bass player and as co-producer with me, was just awesome! Not only because of his pure talent and experience but also because he’s such a great guy. That’s why Nashville Sessions Volume 2 is already in the works,” Martin grins.

Stan Martin’s talent both as a singer/songwriter and gifted guitar man possesses maturity and skills developed from lessons learned over time that are untouched by the ever changing trends that have all but attempted to eliminate the originality, tradition and passion once attributed to country music. He masters the skills needed to navigate an ever changing music business landscape but doing it on his own terms, staying true to his roots and at the end of the day to an artist, that’s what matters. Stan Martin believes no matter where you are from, you can still relate to, appreciate and play country music. “People still have broken hearts and still fall in love. People still drink. And you can still sing about it in a three minute song,” Stan Martin smiles.
