The life of the full-time touring musician can be bittersweet—the excitement
and satisfaction of traveling and performing always coming at the cost of
having to leave behind family and home. The inspiration for this song
occurred one glorious January morning walking in my hay fields at home,
just back from a long road trip with the band. A flock of swans had come to
graze on last season’s corn; beyond them stood the snow-capped Coastal
mountains. I wanted to write something to express all my longing for
home—and to promise my dear, faithful companion that I will always return.
By the grace of God (with an assist from John Reischman and Byron
Berline) Vince Gill is singing with me, duet style!
