River Rising
Last night when I was sleepin’, big storm visited me
Cold sheets of rain bringing only misery
Momma cried from the attic, “Water sure is getting deep
Wake up children, ain’t no time for sleep”
Daddy ran to the levee, water rising mighty high
Lookin’ at the horizon, black clouds rolling in the sky

[CHORUS]
Raging river risin’ more and more every day
If the levee breaks, it’ll wash our dreams away

BREAKS

Momma always said, “Someday that levee’s gonna blow
Flood these lowlands, we just planted not very long ago”
Levee broke and wiped away our lives and dreams
Dark, muddy waters takin’ everything with the stream
Crying on the rooftops, the waters carryin’ us away
And we floated down the river like some hopeless castaways

[CHORUS]

BREAKS

(Soft) In a camp that night, I thought I heard
Someone call my name
They called my Mom a refugee,
Somebody said God’s to blame
But who built the levees, who put up the dam
Who played God with everything he blessed with his own hand
Rampaging devastation of all we once thought whole
The river’s cruel companion with no mercy and no soul

[CHORUS]

If the levee breaks, take our dreams away
