Legendary songwriter and activist Si Kahn celebrates his 66th birthday with this 16th collection of original songs, a powerful tribute to the people he’s known and worked with over the past 45 years.
Si has done a difficult thing here,
says Grammy-winner Kathy Mattea, who adds her stunning vocals and passionate liner notes to COURAGE.
With ease and grace, he’s told a heroic story by looking through small windows into the lives of everyday people.


Like Si’s signature song Aragon Mill, several of the songs on COURAGE already have the ring of classics. It’s easy to imagine Peace Will Rise passing into the folk tradition, as Aragon Mill has done, being sung in pubs all over Ireland:

If those who prayed for violence, and shed their children’s blood/ Can work for peace that lasts beyond all time / The enemies in other lands may some day staunch the flood/ Of war that breaks all hearts, both yours and mine

But if you think COURAGE is all seriousness, think again. Si’s trademark offbeat sense of humor (this is, after all, the man who wrote Rubber Blubber Whale) shows up in the opening song about a Labrador retriever who’s convinced he can fly, co-written with Tom Chapin as a love song for Tom’s dog, the heroic if not exactly brilliant Otis.

Si’s previous CD THANKSGIVING was recognized by the Folk-DJ list as the #1 CD, #1 song and #1 artist for November 2007.

COURAGE was recorded at Double Time Studio in the North Carolina mountains, near Si’s family log cabin (in which Si was neither born nor raised--but he does much of his songwriting there). Banjo genius Jens Krüger of The Krüger Brothers not only produced and arranged the songs; he played all the instruments (except the oodoo, whatever an oodoo is) and wrote original instrumentals to go with several of them. Jens’ daughter Anja Krüger makes her CD debut with harmony vocals on Going Up the Mountain, the closest thing to a rocker Si has done yet.

COURAGE is being released concurrently with Si’s latest book Creative Community Organizing: A Guide for Rabble-Rousers, Activists and Quiet Lovers of Justice. The lyrics to eight of the 16 songs on COURAGE are included in the book, along with many other original and traditional songs.

With an understated intensity, Ben Bedford's sophomore album, Land of the Shadows , delivers intriguing sketches of America, past and present, its individuals, their victories and their struggles. Continuing the journey across the American landscape that Bedford began with his first release, Lincoln's Man, the listener is drawn deep into detailed narratives of hope, fear, joy, loss and the connection of the soul to the outer experience.

The songs which comprise Land of the Shadows exhibit a gritty reality, while simultaneously exposing the inner lives of the characters within those songs. For example, The Sangamon details the turmoil felt by a man who has lost his wife and child due to complications in childbirth, while Amelia Recounts the successful 1932 transatlantic solo flight of Amelia Earhart and her victory over both the landscape of culture and .. icebergs, sharp and white... Twenty One and Fisher's Hill are both stories of ordinary soldiers torn from their families and the juxtaposition of their longing for home with the battlefield they now face. One Night at a Time is a song of thanksgiving and love for things both tangible and intangible, set against a winter backdrop of central Illinois near the Sangamon River. However, probably the most powerful example of the connection between the unseen world and the flesh and blood of reality is the title track ?and of the Shadows (For Emmett Till).Set in Mississippi in 1955, the song portrays the events surrounding the murder of Emmett Till and the ..dark and light...sides of humanity.
Land of the Shadows was recorded and produced by Chas Williams at Robert E. Lee Studios, outside Nashville, TN.

Williams, former sideman to Nanci Griffith, once again adds his signature resonator, acoustic and banjo while also penning the one instrumental of the album, Ten Paces. Bedford and Williams, along with mixing engineer Dave Sinko, sought to create an open, warm and natural sounding album with Bedford's lyrics taking center stage and his acoustic guitar driving the rhythm and feel. Also featuring: Kari Abate-Bedford (harmonies), David Spicher (upright bass), Peter Young (drums), Joey Schmidt (accordion), Tammy Rogers (fiddle), Ron de la Vega (cello), and Jon Randall (harmonies).

Following the critical and chart success of Bedford's first album on the Folk-DJ charts in 2008, Land of the Shadows topped the same charts with the No. 1 album, artist and song for January of 2009. Bedford recently returned from his first tour of The Netherlands, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom and he is currently booking his 2010-2011 touring schedule.
