Ride Away
Holding his helmet and a cold cigarette
he tries to light a match but they are sopping wet
now he's staring at the asphalt, he can taste her breath
and he knows she gave it all till she had nothing left
and then he heard the words she said
Then the walls came closing in like the pinewood box
that his daddy rests in, in their overgrown lot
When momma left one night, his daddy cried and said
Son, don't ever give your heart away
so when you hear her say I love you
Just ride away, let the wind drown out all those words you wish you never heard
Ride away, lock your heart up tight, as you red line that thunderbird
Now he's hauling down the road like a bullet from a gun
rocked by all the love she had, and how he had to run
the hairs along his neck rise when he sees his momma's face
telling him to turn back, that true love was not to waste
that it can't ever be replaced
He hauled on the handles of that hog and tried to turn
and he skidded on the gravel and the world it turned and turned
flying through the air in the arms of the wind
he thought he could feel her loving him again
until the darkness set in
Just ride away, let the wind drown out all those words you wish you never heard
Ride away, lock your heart up tight, as you red line that thunderbird
