Biography
The second Pinecastle release for New Vintage highlights the style they’ve become so well known for – blending modern country influences with traditional bluegrass. Julie Elkins’ voice has a modern feel and blends with Russell Johnson’s high lonesome Monroe-styled tenor to create magic. Elkins on banjo, Johnson on mandolin, Earl Lewellyn on guitar, Richard Hamm on bass, and Jan Johansson on fiddle round out the tight and harmonic instrumentation. Sands of Time contains several original tunes, and songs by Lyle Lovett, Kevin Welch, Janet Beasley and others.
“A real strength of the group is versatility. …the instrumental work is punchy, clean, none too frilly and distinctly down-to-earth. …the more modern sound they use comes especially from the songs themselves. Thus, New Vintage finds itself able to straddle two worlds comfortably.” – Bluegrass Unlimited
