It can be difficult to find a safe place to share what's on your mind; you worry that what you say in confidence won't stay there, or that it will affect other people's relationships and perspectives. Sometimes the ear of someone totally outside of your usual circles can be a neutral place to speak your mind without worrying about the consequences. My favourite metaphor in the song is playing the cards your dealt, but using your own delusions as wild cards. "Show the cards that I've been dealt, with the wild cards of lies I tell myself. "
